Character: Finn / FN-2187
Age: 23
Canon: Star Wars
Canon Point: Episode 7 - The Force Awakens - Mid Battle with Kylo Ren, just before being taken out, just after the shoulder burn.
Background:The Star Wars Wiki on Finn"Not anymore. The name's Finn. And I'm in charge.
I'm in charge now, Phasma! I'm in charge!"
Personality:Finnās life, to start, was a bit askewed to that of a normal person. From birth Finn was raised as FN-2187, a Cadet being raised and trained to be a proper Stormtrooper for the First Order. Throughout his entire life he has been taught history and views that were First Order Approved with a heavy leaning to the Empire and Imperial life. Through propaganda he watched as the New Republic left planets and races to starve and die while the hard working heroic First Order swooped in and tried their best to save them. Because of this his view of the worlds is a little off and heās having to learn whatās real at a run.
While training through the First Order Finn was a very loyal and a valued individual in training. He was considered one of the better cadets in the top one percent in training. Highly intelligent for a trooper, he was being considered as officer material. His only issue was his empathy towards his fellow cadets who displayed less than stellar talents. When one falls behind he finds it his duty to try and help push the other along, save him and get all of his team out. The concept of āOne of Usā or āNo Man Left Behindā was strong with Finn.
When told that this was a problem and that he had to let the weaker fall in order to weed them out, Finn took issue with this but, being a loyal son of the First Order, he did what was told and tried to let the other learn on his own, even if it meant falling behind. This never set well for Finn. It was this as well as noticing the fact that while on a mission to secure a mining facility, the miners seemed scared of them, being kept against their will and illtreated. That was his turning point, when he realized the First Order actually ruled through fear. He started to crack at this point, not wanting to be part of this. Heād always thought something was wrong with him as he thought perhaps he was deficient or defective. After all, he was the one having trouble fitting in.
In his attempt to escape he devised a plan that would ultimately hijack a Resistance Pilot Prisoner to which he would use to pilot them out of there. At the time it wasnāt the most well thought out plan as he was a little bit desperate to escape. He managed to pull it off however, lying to a fellow Stormtrooper, taking Poe Dameron and leading him out. In a fast moment he told the pilot that he was doing this because āitās the right thing to doā but in reality the lie was seen through pretty fast. He needed a pilot.
This helps demonstrate that for one, heās a bit of a terrible liar when you can see his face! Itās all there in his eyes and face. Finn tends to wear his heart on his sleeve for everyone to see. When heās excited, sad, upset, scared or simply lying, itās pretty easy to see. Perhaps itās from all those years of hiding behind a mask, but heās very bad at hiding his emotions, and he does flip through them pretty well. Itās even said that he has the eyes of a scared boy who wants to run away. Everything about him is easy to read from his face, motions and stance.
When he panics he sweats, fidgets or paces. While running away from danger heās been seen grabbing Reyās hand a few times, possibly just to make sure sheās with him as they run but also possibly as a comfort for himself. There has been several occasions where HE has taken a hit or a fall, only to be offered help by another, in which he asks if they are okay, checking on their well being. Finn is a pretty caring guy.
Caring yes, but heās also not blinded to the Resistances ācauseā either. Sure, they might seem to want to do good, but all he wants to do is get away. Finn has been through this group thing before. He was raised as a trooper and tool. The last thing he really wants to do is join another group. When given the chance to leave and go into hiding he very nearly does it, begging the ONE person he trusted to come with him. He only turned around and came back when that one person, Rey, was in trouble. Even when he does make it to the Resistance, his priority is to finding and getting back Rey. As the Resistance asks for help with information on Starkiller Base, he does manage to help, but he does it for his own selfish reasons. His own motives. He does it because he needs to get on the base to find Rey first. He even admits it to Han Solo while on the base, who lays into him that the Resistance is relying on him!
Finn does what is right of course, but his main goal is still to find and rescue Rey (who doesnāt need too much help but was glad to see him anyhow!). For Finn, he is more a people person not a group person. He seems to have made fast friends with both Rey and Poe (who he was SO delighted to find alive that he ran to the man for a hug and the story about what happened!) who he is fiercely loyal to.
I like to believe that Finn not only made friends with these two people fast because of the circumstances, but also because heās looking for a place to fit in. Poe gave him a name, and in training and his group, names were important. Each person had a Number not a name, so within the group some people ended up giving others nicknames. Everyone in his unit had one except for him. They simply shortened his number to 87 from time to time. It was pointed out that it made him the leader of the group as well as the outcast. The one that didnāt fit in. That stood out. Because of this, the moment Poe refuses to use his number and asked if he was alright with being called Finn, the young man grasped to the name like it was a treasure and agreed.
Finn is very brave! It is displayed throughout the movie too, not just the end. In the end, yes, heās facing a wounded Force User in a lightsaber battle, not being trained to use the weapon but still bravely standing up against Kylo Ren in order to protect Rey (because that too is another strong point, he is very protective!). But this isnāt his first display of bravery! If you think about it, even as he appears to be fiercely scared and panicked through the first half of the movie, he is actually being extremely brave! Once understanding that the First Order is not what he was raised to believe he could have stayed and allowed them to force him to conform. Instead, fear pushed him but bravely drove him to not only kidnap the high profile prisoner of war to escape, but also pull through with a half thought out plan. In their escape he swiftly adapted to using a weapons system he had never used before, fired on and killed fellow troopers trying to stop them and worked with a stranger to get off the ship.
He later displays such bravery as he runs screaming at a dark warrior trying to take Rey away, dashing through a battlefield. He fought troopers, some of which he trained with. He braved a fight with huge odds against them, and in the end he went with and helped the Resistance. The same one he wanted nothing to do with. Finn might seem scared and fearful a lot of the time, but he doesnāt let it hold him back. He always pushes past all that.
In short, Finn is a friendly, good hearted guy who wears his heart on his sleeve for all to see. Heās brave and smart, willing to fight if he has to but not so willing to mindlessly join a cause just to be another trooper or tool. Heās a protective kind of guy willing to keep an eye on the little guy and stick up for others. Heās well trained, smart, loyal, dutiful and stronge. Appearing in a new place might be a bit startling at first, especially where I am taking him from, but in the end he will take interest in helping other people, learning new things and trying his best to find a place he fits in."He almost killed me six times!"
Abilities:As far as we know Finn is a normal human. He has no supernatural control over anything important that we know of. Heās just a normal boy who was taken from his family and raised then trained to fight, obey and serve the First Order. This training consisted of everything to make a Stormtrooper proper and proficient. In tests, training and exams, Finn passed everything in the top 1%, making him very eye catching to Captain Phasma and others, considered one of their best cadets at the time as well as Officer Material. His trainers had high hopes for him and even the General Hux liked what he saw. The problem was his empathy, which set him back and apart from the others and the First Order training.
In this training he was known to be VERY good with blasters, rifles and other firing weapons. Where others wasted shots shooting haphazardly, he always eyes the shot properly, find his target with ease and only fired when he knew it would hit. Generally he would have scores in the 99% accuracy and efficiency range.
He was also trained with a mace and shield, which is what I use in my mind to help explain why he managed to use the lightsaber well enough to battle against Kylo Ren. This was displayed in the book āBefore the Awakeningā where we see more into FN-2187ās life before he became Finn. Itās a brief glance at the Stormtrooper training and gives us a feeling that they were trained in all forms of combat. When pitted against his fellow cadets he stayed in the ring the longest, able to hold his own for a long time before being taken out. It was training like that that explains how he managed to use a lightsaber against a trained (and heavily wounded) warrior. Perhaps if he had a riot shield with him while fighting, things would have turned out differently.
Finn seems to speak mostly basic only. The First Order, like the Imperials of the Empire were very āSpeciesistā in the idea that Humans were superior to all. The Basic or Standard Galactic language was the language of choice and I consider that what he was taught. That being said, he doesnāt understand when other species speak in their languages (He doesnāt understand Chewbacca). Nor does he understand Binary, or Droidspeak which BB-8 uses to talk. While Rey and Poe understand BB-8, he tends to give the droid a blank stare and has to try to find other ways to communicate.
Education wise he has the basics to keep him up as a smart trooper, but he doesnāt hold a working knowledge of others things, like tools and parts needed to fix a ship, or how to FLY a ship, as he wasnāt trained to be a pilot. He is however a fast learner and picks things up swiftly, so perhaps after a few times of doing it, he too can pilot ships on his own. His fast learning skills is shown well early on, where he and Poe get into a TIE fighter and Poe rambles off swiftly the controls needed to fire the cannons. With little time to do much more then try, Finn slipped into the seat and set to blowing things up, picking up the system swiftly.
Headcanon for me says that Finn has a lot of the basics of military training. He knows how to strip and clean blasters and standard weapons, he knows basic hand to hand combat training, tactics, and such. Heās got basic first aid and CPR skills. He should be able to plot a course on a navigation system, even if the finer points of flying isnāt something he can do. Knowing how to work on different planets/terrains should have also been in training. Like swimming with armor on, making a fire, or dealing with temperature changes. That kind of thing. So things like swimming isnāt going to be a āwow, Iāve never done that before!ā kind of thing."Come and get it!"
Alignment:I am choosing Thras for the time being, mostly because out of everything these are the traits he displays the most. Though I think that he would fit Peromei as well, something about Thras fits just a little better.
Fear - He displays a lot of it throughout the movie. When he first realizes what the First Order does, he displays a desperate need to get out and away from it, even to the point of kidnapping Kylo Renās captured Pilot, Poe Dameron. While escorting the pilot out he verbally tells HIMSELF to stay calm. He sweats heavy when scared or stressed out. He grabs others hands as he runs from things, either to make sure they are safe and running with him, or from an unconscious need to keep them with him out of fear of losing them. When others want to go back to Jakku, he freaks out a bit because that is the LAST place they should all want to be.
Bravery - On the other hand he does display bravery often. Heās a strong man who has good training, but when times are needed to stand up and fight, he will do it. In deciding to escape the First Order on his own it showed a strong shift of bravery. When he thought that Rey and the BB-8 were being attacked on Jakku, before meeting them, he rushed in a brave attempt to help them, only to find it wasnāt needed. When in the War Room on DāQar he braved up and offered to help the Resistance get on the planet. Although he just wanted to save Rey, he still went back to the one place he didnāt want to be to do it. In the end, when he thought Rey was hurt he bravely took up a strange weapon he had barely used once before and stood his ground against Kylo Ren, who was well trained in the weapon."Droid, please!."
Other:From the point I am pulling Finn from, he would still be holding the blue Lightsaber. I believe Rey also came with it, so it would be a duplicate into the world. If this is not okay, please let me know! Otherwise, he has one as well. Also, the canon point will leave him with a fairly bad wound in his right shoulder, but taken just before the slash across his back.
"You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance,
which puts a real target on my back."
which puts a real target on my back."

Questions:Just curious if his coming in with a duplicate lightsaber is okay! See: āOtherā for details.
